Articles: The holistic treatment of cancer

Dr Clare Middle BVMS, Dip.Ac.,Dip.Hom.

When treating animals naturopathically for cancer, there is no set protocol. Each case is assessed using such factors as; ease of administering treatment, cost, owner preference, degree of emotional causation of disease, past treatments used, ability of owner to make repeated visits and urgency of need for quick results. Most animal cancer patients on natural therapy treatments will show reduction in pain or symptoms. About half of the cases we see have a remission period where the tumour reduces significantly in size for a few weeks or months, and very occasionally they will live a normal lifespan. Often, combining surgery, chemotherapy and natural therapies can give better results than more limited treatment programs.

A combination of modalities is generally used including the following:

  • Ting-point acupuncture
  • Homoeopathy
  • Nutrition
  • Flower essences, reiki, psychic healing, owner counselling
  • Herbs

    Ting-point Acupuncture
This involves two needles only for ten minutes, repeated weekly for three treatments. In about half of treated cases, the tumour reduces and the animal has an increased feeling of wellbeing, so the treatment is continued monthly.

    Homoeopathy
This is a very useful and inexpensive treatment to help optimise the immune function and also to treat specific symptoms. In the particular case of a tumour continuing to grow back after repeated surgical removal, using a homoeopathic for the specific tumour can be very successful in preventing regrowth again.

    Nutrition
A natural diet is highly recommended for optimal health in cancer patients (see our separate brochure on Natural Diet for Dogs and Cats). Specific nutrients can then be added depending on the type of cancer and the individual case.

Flower essences, Reiki and Psychic healing
These treatments act at the outer auric or emotional levels, as well as the physical, to help resolve the psychic or emotional issue which has eventually become manifest as a physical disease. For animals, this could be, for example, grief for a human or animal, a bad accident or dog fight, or being stray or badly treated when young.

    Herbs
The links below are descriptions of two herbal treatments for cancer which we use to treat most cancer patients at this clinic. They can be used alone or together, in combination with other natural therapies, or with chemotherapy or surgery.
